Kiedis dating

2020.05.28 12:54 JoseMikey Borders question answered... they will open June 15th, see source, biggest proof/suggestion yet.

https://businessinsider.com.pl/wiadomosci/kiedy-polska-otworzy-granice-jest-mozliwa-data/eez6b5h
The source isn’t yet official, but it’s a vice minister and his reasoning is to basically save Lot Polish Airlines, one of the countries jewels or at least it seems the authorities see it as such. And with other airlines starting flights earlier or around the same time, if Lot does not, it’s a goner, even with government help (for which there is no money and which could be deemed illegal). So I think the date is rather believable.

2020.05.17 17:12 Yoredlol RHCP after 2001 ?

Hi! I just finished "Scar Tissu" the Anthony's biography. The book was published on 2004. Kiedis tells his story with the band but especially the drugs.
But now, I'm realy curious about what happened after this period, do you know why Frusciante leaves the band again (drug problems) ? Do you know if Kiedis relapsed into drugs? Do you know how they recruited Josh ? (I know Josh is a friend of John, but why him ?)
Maybe all that is on the Flea's book but it's not atm translated into French (maybe you know a release date?)
Sorry for my approximate english :(
Thanks !

2020.02.06 14:26 yoandudu Interesting article by Kerrang! about the By the Way recording session at the Chateau Marmont (+ pictures) (2002)

Hi everyone !
While hanging around on the internet, I found an article about the recording session of By The Way (pictures above) and I thought I'd share it for those who are not necessarily aware of it and/or those who want to deepen this period a bit more.
Pictures of Kerrang! :

Also, pictures of John (not in the article) :

Le Chateau Marmont for those who don't know it :
https://i.imgur.com/XRAAQsH.jpg
Here's the article :
"On location
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Venue: Chateau Marmont Hotel, Los Angeles
Date: January 19, 2002
Event: The Red Hot Chili Peppers record their new album
THE CHATEAU Marmont is one of Los Angeles’ more famous landmarks. Located at 8221 Sunset Boulevard, this plush, well-heeled hotel has the sort of pedigree most other establishments would sell their silverware for. Once infamous as one of the city’s most rock ‘n’ roll hangouts — the Velvet Underground and Doors frontman Jim Morrison hung out here in the ’60s, while punk-loving ‘Animal House’ star John Belushi injected a fatal cocktail of heroin and cocaine in one of its bungalows in 1982 — today, you’re more likely to see Hollywood’s elite swanning around its polished corridors.
In a suite on the seventh floor, however, there’s some decidedly rock ‘n’ roll activity going on. It’s here that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are putting the finishing touches to their as-yet-untitled eighth album. Right now, the room is a hive of activity: as well as Chilis vocalist Anthony Kiedis and guitarist John Frusciante, there’s also producer Rick Rubin (who worked with the band on their last album, 1999′s ‘Californication’), an engineer named Ethan and the Chilis’ long-time tour manager Louis Mathieu.
The room itself has been converted into a studio. Gone is the bed and associated boudoirtrappings, and the windows have been covered. A single lamp in one corner lends an air of low-key ambience to the room. As Anthony Kiedis says, it’s a great place to draw inspiration from.
The atmosphere in the suite is deeply relaxed. The recording sessions usually begin around five in the afternoon; they generally kick off with Kiedis laying down a vocal track to whichever song he’s working on (today, it’s the balladic ‘Don’t Forget’), after which the vocalist and Rick Rubin will run through the song, rewriting lyrics and redoing different sections of vocals until they’re both satisfied with the final take. Breaks take place at regular times, mainly to give people the chance to step back and listen to what’s been recorded so far that day.
Among the tracks recorded so far include ‘By The Way’, ‘Minor Thing’, ‘Dosed’, ‘Warm Place’, ‘Wolverine (This Is The Place)’ and ‘Universally Speaking’, although Kiedis insists that these are all working titles. Things are certainly moving well on the album, which is scheduled to emerge in early June, and the Chilis plan to air some of the new tracks when they tour the UK at the end of that month. Understandably, Anthony Kiedis is optimistic about the coming months."

If anyone has other anecdotes, feel free to share them!

2019.12.18 02:01 Brian-Petty I promised my mom I would kill my sister [Part 9]

Hello everyone! Something really interesting has happened. Inside the Tulip Journal I found an entry that talks about a professor that mom and dad contacted to talk about the family “history”. He teaches at a university about an hour from here. I called and left a message on his voicemail. Hopefully he has not gone home for the holidays. I looked him up online but didn’t find much. The journal doesn’t spell out what he told them, but it does refer back to him in several entries from the spring of 2015. I need to ask him to tell me exactly what he told them. And what they told him.
I also found out that my dad will be calling today or tomorrow. I have a lot of questions to ask him.
Thank you to everyone who has reached out reminding me to take care of myself. I did get a decent amount of sleep last night and Tulip has been quiet since the camera incident. We are doing some decorating today, which is something she loves. She hung mom and dad’s stocking on the fireplace. I’m not sure she fully understands that they aren’t coming back.
She’s also been asking me to fix her hair. She likes to wear ponytails. So this morning I found out that I am not good at ponytails. I try to make one, she goes into the bathroom, looks in the mirror and then pulls it out and throws the rubber band at me and laughs. She thinks it’s pretty funny that I can’t do it right. Her hair is only a little longer than her chin so it’s harder than it looks. I guess I should be glad that braiding hair is not a skill Marines have to know.
With everything that is going to happen, I’m glad to see her having some happy days. And she really loves Christmas.
One other big thing happened early this morning. I opened the lock box. The numbers dad gave me didn’t work. I tried them in a bunch of configurations but nothing opened. Well, it didn’t open until I tried a hammer and screwdriver instead. [Sorry dad]. Inside the metal lockbox was a thin wooden box about 12 inches long and 3 inches tall. There wasn’t anything on the outside of it but it looked old. Inside the box was a broken dagger and a piece of paper folded into a square. The paper also looked pretty old. It was starting to tear in the creases where it was folded.
At the top it says
Scindo de geminos
Underneath that was more writing in whatever language that is. Maybe the professor will know what it means. If I don’t hear from him soon I’ll call the secretary of his department and find out where he is. Maybe there is a way to do something. What does it do? Were my parents going to use it? Why did my dad give me fake numbers?
There were four other documents in the hidden spot by the attic window. The first one was my father’s birth certificate. The second was a matching birth certificate with the same date as my father but no name listed. The third one was a death certificate for Baby [last name]. It was dated the same day. The final one was a death certificate for Hazel [last name]. It was dated the same day as all the other documents.
Here’s the thing. My grandmother’s name wasn’t Hazel. It was Virginia. Hazel isn’t listed in the family tree. This has to have been dad’s real mother. Does that mean my grandfather knew that Hazel would die when he married her? He has to have, right?
Why didn’t my parents tell me any of this? Did they honestly think I’d never need to know? I just feel kind of pissed off, particularly with my dad. All I know is that I have a lot of questions and he better give me answers, phone call recorder be damned.
Right now, I need to get back to watching Tulip. I can see her from where I’m sitting, but I don’t want to take any more chances than I have to. I can’t imagine what she’s thinking with me being here and our parents being gone. I’m not sure it has fully registered. Or maybe she thinks they’re coming back.
She’s wrapping presents. [Don’t worry, she uses plastic scissors.] I know exactly what she’s getting me. She gets me the same thing every year. An apple and a drawing of the two of us. I have no idea why she has always given us apples. But it’s my favorite gift every year. When I was deployed she sent an apple picture, usually torn out of a magazine or printed off the computer. I’m sure she argued with mom about it. Every year. And it’s hard to argue with Tulip because she doesn’t talk. That doesn’t mean she fails to get the message across. I wonder if she will wrap one or three.
Anyway, I just wanted to pop on here and give you an update. I’m going to call the professor again in a few minutes and I hope to hear from my dad soon. I have so many questions. Why didn’t he ever mention his real mom? Where is the dagger from? What does the writing on the paper mean? What did the professor tell him?
What does he know about the curse?
He is going to tell me the truth, it’s the least he can do.
-Brian
Edited to add: Here is the writing on the piece of paper with the broken dagger.
Kiedy dwa życia żyją w jednym ciele, ostrze bliźniaków,
przez krótki czas, ujawni ich obu. Rzuć ostrze głęboko w ich serce.
Nie wahaj się, moc ostrza szybko zanika.

2019.10.04 15:31 leandrorhcp 12th Studio Album - Info & Discussion

This is a megathread devoted to updates on the band's upcoming 12th album to avoid the weekly posts asking for news.
It seems the band is still in the writting process, which doesn't gives a lot of hopes for a 2020 release, but still possible. Confirmation of the European summer festival run hints the album could be out by then, but we'll see how things unfold.
Here's every mention so far:
November 5, 2019 · Flea interview with The Rock
We're in the process of writing a new album and we were kind of going head on with it, and then we started doing some shows like all over the world. After we did Australia and stuff, and we were in Japan and Singapore and Abu Dhabi and Brazil and I have this book coming out, and I'm going on a book tour here in the States. But after that we're definitely gonna focus in and get that going.
November 4, 2019 · Flea during a book signing on Facebook Live
I can't give a date for that. We're working on it, we've been writing and piecing it together. But kind of got distracted from the writing process over the last few months because we've been around the world doing concerts and I'm doing my book thing right now, and I've got married two weeks ago. So I don't know, but next year some time for sure.
January 16, 2019 · Chad interview with SiriusXM
We started to work on it, which for us is just getting in a room and making some noise and putting some notes together and then the [Malibu] fires came, and the house we were working in – there was no damage, it didn’t burn down, but we couldn’t get back in there. So that halted our progress.
October, 2018 · Anthony interview with Dash Radio
Q: Obviously you're writing a new record, hopefully it will come out sometime next year. A: We actually start on Monday. Officially. Q: So almost definitely comes out next year? Good chance? A: Umm... yes. Next year? I mean, correct.
September 12, 2018 · Anthony interview with NY Post
Kiedis doesn’t like to keep fans waiting, either. He revealed that the Chili Peppers will begin work on a new album in about two weeks.
Flea & Chad have posted a few studio pictures during 2019, but it's now confimed they were recording for side projects and/or very early demos, as they're still during the writting process as stated above.
As soon as new info is released this thread will be updated.

2019.08.08 03:06 CDaNadmin A long list of actors, directors and musicians and their victims (from She the People on FB)

UPDATED LIST
Let's start back in 1919. Charlie Chaplin, who would become one of the most famous and celebrated movie stars of all time, was 29 when he married 16 year old aspiring actress Mildred Harris. Their marriage only lasted 2 years. In 1924, Chaplin repeated the pattern with another 16 year old, Lita Gray. He met Lita when she was just 6 and began taking her on dates around the age of 12.
1954 -- Sam Cooke meets a 12-year old Aretha Franklin and brings her to his hotel room. Before her father interrupted, Aretha said the conversation "took another turn."
In 1957, 23 year old Jerry Lee Lewis married his cousin, 13 year old Myra Brown. She still believed in Santa.
Also in 1957, 16 year old Anna Mae Bullock met 24 year old Ike Turner. He quickly took her into his band, helped make her a star, and began to treat the newly christened "Tina" as if he owned her. They married 6 years later. Tina once wrote that she was afraid not to accept his proposal.
In 1959, Elvis Presley met his future wife. He was 25 and she was 14. They stayed in touch via phone and letters for the next 2 1/2 years. At that time, Elvis took her on a drug romp to Vegas, followed by moving her into his Graceland mansion. They didn't marry until 1967. While both parties claimed that Priscilla was a virgin on her wedding night, biographer Susan Finstad makes a strong case that this could not be true. Priscilla herself has admitted that she & Elvis slept in the same bed and that Elvis "taught (her) other ways to please him." Elvis reportedly had a predeliction for 14 year old girls, both before and after his marriage to Priscilla.
Chuck Berry was arrested and found guilty of transporting an underage girl across state lines for immoral purposes, spending two years in jail in 1960.
In 1969, Sable Starr, queen of the so-called "baby groupies", had a brief relationship with Iggy Pop. She was 13. He later wrote a song about it. Starr had sexual relationships with many other band members, including encouters with David Bowie, Mick Jagger, and Rod Stewart.
It's 1972 and Rock stars are stil having sex with little girls and everyone knows it, but no one does anything about it. Lori Mattix tells of losing her virginity at age 14 to David Bowie. She went on to start "dating" Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page that same year, a relationsihp that began when Page's manager kidnapped her and brought her to Jimmy's hotel room. Page kept Lori essentially locked up in his house for most of their 18 months together. The "baby groupie" also reports a sexual relationship with Mick Jagger when she was just 17.
In 1973, married singer Marvin Gaye met and pursued 17 year old Janis Hunter. He wrote "Let's Get it On" as a tribute to his lust for her. Marvin took his teen date to dinner shortly after they met, where he bribed the waiter to bring her alcohol, then had sex with her later that night. They had a baby by the time she was 18, and married in 1977. The marriage lasted just 3 years.
In 1975, Steven Tyler purchased the guardianship of a 16 year old girl (Julia Holcomb) from her mother when he was 27 so that he could legally take her with him across state lines while he was on tour.
In 1978, Ted Nugent also purchases the guardianship of a teenager from her parents. He was 30, Pele Massa was 17. Years later, Ted reportedly received oral sex from a 12 year old Courtney Love.
March 10, 1977. One of the most well-known cases. Director Roman Polanski drugs and rapes 13 year old Samantha Gailey. Allowed to plead guilty to a lesser charge, Polanski nevertheless fled to France before sentencing and remains exiled from the United States. He has not been exiled, however, from Hollywood and continues to make movies and win awards to this day.
Eagles drummer and vocalist Don Henley was arrested in 1980 in Los Angeles after paramedics were called to his home to save a naked 16-year-old girl who was overdosing on cocaine and Quaaludes.
Colored over as a a "grand romance" and a "decades long relationship", Celine Dion was 12 years old when 38 year old Rene Angelil became her manager. They went public with their relationship when she was 19.
In 1984, Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman started dating Mandy Smith. She was 13. Although they did not marry until she was 18, Mandy says she was 14 when they first had sex. Mr. Wyman has never been investigated, much less prosecuted.
Red Hot Chili Peppers' lead Anthony Kiedis readily admits to having sex with a 14 year old girl when he was 23. According to him, once he confirmed her age he "had sex with her again." In 1986, the 24-year old musician began dating 16 year old Ione Skye.
In 1990, 16 year old Mayte Garcia's mother sent a video of her belly-dancing to Prince. He arranged to meet her, confirmed she was 16 and a year later moved her into his house. When she was 19, he initiated a sexual relationshi by informing her it was time to go on birth control. They married when she was 22 and he was 37. Before Mayte, Prince met "Anna Fantastic" when she was 15. At 17, she moved into his compound where they had a two year long relationship.
In 1991, 32 year old director Luc Besson met and eventually married model Maïwenn Le Besco when she was 15. Their relationship inspired his movie Léon: The Professional (1994), which followed an emotional relationship between an adult man and a young girl.
In 1993, Jerry Seinfeld picked up a high school student in a public park. He was 39 and she was 17. He and Shoshanna Lonstein dated for four years -- through her college years.
Also in 1993, MC Ren of N.W.A. was accused of raping and impregnating a 16 year old girl in the group's tour bus. The case never went to trial, however a paternity test showed that he was the father of the girl's baby.
Noted pedophile R Kelley secretly married R&B singer Aaliyah in 1994 when she was 15 and he was 27. They met when she was 12 and he later helped write and produce her first album -- "Age Ain't Nothing but a Number."
In 1995, teen star Brandy (age 16) started dating 21-year-old Boyz II Men member Wanya Morris. Keeping their relationship under wraps due to her age proved too stressful for the couple and they broke up soon after.
In 1997, Woody Allen should have become notorious when he married his de facto step-daughter. Though she was 21 at the time of the wedding, the two met when she 8. No matter the spin, the facts are stark. This wasn't the only time Allen dated a much younger woman. Actress Babi Christina Engelhardt began a years-long love affair with Allen when she was 16 and he was 41. When Allen was 42, he romanced 17-year-old actress and high school senior Stacey Nelkin.
It's the early-mid 2000s and "That 70s Show" actor, Wilmer Valderrama, continues to date teenage girls in an effort to deny that he is now over 30. He dated 16-year-old Mandy Moore despite being four years her senior. At age 24, Valderrama dated 17-year-old Lindsay Lohan though they kept the relationship a secret until her 18th birthday in 2004. In 2010, the 30-year-old began dating 17-year-old Demi Lovato.
In 2001, Fast & Furious star Paul Walker (28 at the time) was dating 16-year old Aubrianna Atwell. This was not Paul's last time to date a teenager. His girlfriend at the time of his death, Jasmine Pilchard-Gosnell, was 23 to his 40. They met when she was 16.
Back in 2004, 26 year old Joel Madden and Hilary Duff did the familiar dance of being "just friends" until her 18th birthday in 2006. When asked about whether she was intimate with Madden or not in a 2015 interview with Cosmopolitan, Duff stated, "I had a 26-year-old boyfriend. So everyone can make their own assumptions about what I was doing."
In 2005, clean cut TV heartthrob Chad Michael Murray begins dating a girl in high school. They get engaged when she turns 18 and Murray calls her a "little sweetheart" and says they have been together "for awhile."
Similarly, in 2006, co-stars Hayden Panettiere and Milo Ventimiglia began dating. She was 17. He was 12 years her senior.
Actor Doug Hutchison married 16-year-old Courtney Stodden in 2011, when he was 51 years old. The dysfunctional pair became famous as reality stars, with Courtney undergoing extensive plastic surgery to maintain their image.
Rapper Tyga and Kylie Jenner began "hanging out" an awful lot beginning in 2014 when she was 16 and he was 24. They dated on and off after that, though they became a lot more openly "on" after her 18th birthday in 2016.
In late 2018, 44 year old Leonardo DiCaprio publicly reveals that he is dating 21 year old model Camilla Morrone. It's not the age gap that puts Leo on our list, it's the fact that he's known Camilla since she was 11.
2018 -- 14 year old Millie Bobby Brown innocently revealed that rapper, Drake, age 31, has been close friends with her, for the last year giving her advice about boys. He texts her, "I miss you." This is the same Drake who has, more than once, skated around that "just friends until she turns 18" line -- most recently with 18 year old model Bella Harris.
Guys, this isn't a friendship. This is GROOMING. No one will stop it. They'll "date." He'll have sex with her, probably in a couple of years. No one will care because he's a man and a star.
NO ONE WILL CARE UNLESS WE START MAKING PEOPLE CARE.
Make them care. No free passes. No 2nd chances. A ruined career is the least they deserve. It's not cute. THIS IS NOT OK.

2019.07.24 22:34 MitchManGuy Road Trippin' Through Time: A Look at the Chili's Suave, Sun-Kissed Seventh Studio Album, Californication

TLDR: Hey, guys. I love the Chili Peppers. A lot. And as someone who loves to write, but works in finance, I don’t get much of an opportunity to be creative with my writing these days. I decided to try something new and do a write-up of each RHCP album as if I’m listening to it for the first time. Next up: The Chili’s suave, sun-kissed seventh studio album, Californication. Welcome back, John, and what a hell of a statement after being absent from the band for almost a decade. He really came out swinging here and absolutely nailed it. Californication brought us some of the best-known, classic RHCP songs and is just an overall amazing album.
I’ve also reviewed RHCP’s earlier albums. Check them out:
I was inspired by u/PinkertonRams in weezer for a similar series he did. I loved the format and decided to try it out for RHCP. Here's my scale for grading each song:
  1. Skip. This song has little to no redeeming qualities and we'd be better off without it. (Also known as the Pitchfork score.)
  2. Poor. This song is just a jumbled mess, but might have one or two redeeming qualities.
  3. Average. It’s a decent song, if pretty easily forgettable. Missing that extra ‘something’ to carry it to the next step.
  4. Good. Solid song.
  5. Great. Better than good, not excellent.
  6. Excellent. Better than great. Very close to perfect.
  7. Perfection.
Alright, without further ado, here's my score for each track on Californication:
  1. Around the World 7 – Ohhhh it’s ‘You say hello and then I say adieu,’ not ‘I do.’ I was always confused as hell by that. Then again this is Anthony Kiedis we’re talking about here… Anyway, Californication starts off with a very strong number. Like holy shit, this song is good. It’s interesting to see how much the sound and overall atmosphere of the song (and of the whole album) changes with a new guitarist. I mean, it makes sense, right? The guitarist is usually the one writing a majority of the melodies and serves as the ‘ideas man’ of the group. But right off the bat, it’s easy to see the complete 180 the band turned from their previous record, One Hot Minute. This song is sunny, upbeat, and fueled by fun and happiness, a stark contrast to their style with Dave, which was fueled by anger, sadness, and isolation, although both are beautiful in their own way.
  2. Parallel Universe 7 – Chills, man. Usually in a Chili’s song, there’s always one band member that has a stand out performance. This is one of those songs where it’s almost impossible to pick because everyone does such a fucking great job here. As a musician, you have to appreciate the technical abilities of all four band members AND their ability to create something palatable, unique, and sounds good. A lot of times in rock music (specifically progressive rock), the musicians focus way too much on the technical aspect of what they’re doing and not the overall sound. A lot of times a sense of atmosphere is missing and, while impressive from a purely technical standpoint, it can just sound blah. Credit the Chilis here for being able to walk the fine line between creating something very technical, yet still be able to have fun and create something that sounds so amazing. Even the harshest RHCP critic has to appreciate Anthony’s “CALIFORNIA KIIIIIIINGGGGGG!!!!” It’s just so perfect. And that solo at the end… oh boy. Chills. Every. Damn. Time.
  3. Scar Tissue 7 – I remember going to a Bose store at an outlet mall with my family when I was young. As usual, my sister and mom broke off to go clothes shopping and my dad and I went to the electronics stores. When we walked into Bose, I saw the music video for Scar Tissue playing on the TVs and I was mesmerized. I loved the picture of a convertible driving through the desert and the band members all bandaged up. The mood of the video fit the music perfectly. I watched it again just now and smiled just thinking about that memory that has stuck with me for so long. It’s things like this that I’m sure we can all relate to with this band, whether it’s a great memory at a concert, or turning on an album when you were going through a rough time in your life. I know I’m preaching to the choir here, but this band has done so much to create these kinds of memories for its fans, and usually in completely indirect ways that they didn’t even intend and don’t even realize. Who would’ve thought that a music video playing at a Bose store would bring one four year old kid wonderment and evoke memories of spending time with his dad? Who would’ve thought that this one experience would shape his taste in music for the rest of his life? It’s these happy and profound moments that shape who we are, and it’s a little crazy to think that the Chili Peppers played such a pivotal role in that for me. To this day, Scar Tissue is still my favorite song because of its association with my dad, and that will probably never change. I’m not going to sit here and try to explain how perfect this song is, because we all know how beautiful it is, but I challenge each of you to really think about your favorite song/album/artist and why it is so. Sometimes it helps point us to what really matters to us in life and helps give us direction when we’re feeling lost or sad or scared.
  4. Otherside 7 – Has there been a Chili’s track recorded prior to Otherside that focused solely on the vocal melody? I can’t think of one off the top of my head, but here the spotlight shines only on Anthony. This track is interesting in a few ways, mainly because the Chilis have never recorded anything like it before and probably will never record anything like it again. The songwriting maturity on this track is insanely impressive and the structure is perfect. Listen to the build-up of backing vocals throughout the choruses against the volume of the guitar. During the last chorus, the guitar can’t even be heard as about five Johns fill your speakers giving the song a nice lush melody.
  5. Get on Top 5 – This track is a nice throwback to the dry funk of BSSM. The verses are pretty weak, but the song is saved by a strong chorus and an amazing bridge with a killer guitar melody. Flea also goes nuts on this one, which is always fun to hear.
  6. Californication 7 – Talk about perfect song structure, holy shit. At 5:30, Californication clocks in at the longest track on the album, yet it somehow still leaves you wanting more. That is not an easy task to accomplish. Credit a lot of this to the deceptive complexity and the overload of countermelody that keeps you roped in. The guitar and bass weave in and out of each other during the verses while Anthony sings something completely different on top. In the pre-chorus, Flea takes over the melody in terms of instrumentation, while John sings a countermelody with the ‘ooohs,’ behind Anthony’s main vocal melody. Sheesh. Are you sick of the word ‘melody’ yet? Welp, it’s everywhere and at the forefront of this album, its use is beyond impressive so… melody melody melody melody melody melody!
  7. Easily 6 – I know it wasn’t the band’s intention, but every time I hear this song, I just think of how ‘easily’ the band could just crank out solid song after solid song. The compositions seem effortless in a way… it’s almost indescribable. It plays a large part in the care-free vibe of the whole album and, as much as I love One Hot Minute, Californication is nothing like it in this way which makes it sound refreshing. Easily has one of the relatively weaker verses on the album (emphasis on relatively, it’s still good), with a catchy chorus and an outro with soaring guitars that make you feel like you’re flying through a clear blue sky. It’s a great song.
  8. Porcelain 5 - The melody is sweet and the lyrics are nice, but there’s something stopping this song from being excellent. Maybe the fact that it gets boring near the end even though it’s one of the shorter songs on the record has something to do with it.
  9. Emit Remmus 4 – Damn, Sporty Spice. You really had a hold on Anthony’s heart didn’t you? “Stab that boy all in his heart,” “Drift away from anyone you can / Nothing ever goes according to plan.” Oof. These lyrics are sounding like some One Hot Minute stuff. The weakest song on Californication came from a good idea, a failed relationship with another celebrity, but failed to execute in a lot of areas. The verses are just okay, the chorus isn’t much better, and the bridge is meh. I just wish they would’ve replaced this with Quixoticelixer on the final cut, but oh well.
  10. I Like Dirt 4.5 – This track is arguably the most BSSM-esque tune on the whole album. I wish it would’ve been executed better or mixed better, but oh well. I’ve been putting off talking about the mix for some time now, and maybe it’s time to dive in, because it really affected the sound of the album, and nothing was affected more than I Like Dirt. I’m not a music production guy, and to be honest, I don’t know the difference between mixing and mastering, but holy shit something is terribly wrong. The album sounds extremely compressed and it dulls the rhythm section down and makes everything sound mediocre. If I Like Dirt had used the same mix as BSSM with emphasis on the bass, kick, and snare, then this song would have sounded much better.
  11. This Velvet Glove 6 – You know when you have a really strong album when there’s debate over which songs should be picked as the singles. I think Velvet Glove would have been picked next if they decided to release a sixth. The mellow choruses sound great and the chorus absolutely explodes off of them. It’s by far the best use of dynamic on the record, and serves as a hidden gem in the RHCP catalogue. Overall, it’s quintessential Californication-era RHCP.
  12. Savior 5 – This track is probably the weirdest and least accessible on the album, but overall it’s a decently solid track. A lot of this song’s charm comes from how fun it is to sing out loud. Seriously, go ahead and try it next time you’re in the car or in the shower. It’s a blast. I wish the verses were stronger, but the song is saved by its weird parts featuring jingle bells and a tasty ending guitar solo.
  13. Purple Stain 7 – Holy fuck, that guitabass combo is smooth as hell. Try and name another band that could pull off something like this. It’s a perfect combo of funk and alternative rock. Also the outro is arguably better than Sir Psycho Sexy’s, and that’s really saying something. It’s fun to hear Chad go absolutely ape shit behind the kit as he really hasn’t had a chance to shine anywhere yet besides Parallel Universe. This song is the perfect amount of weird, fun, funky, impressive, and psychedelic, and it all comes together so perfectly to form a really fucking good song.
  14. Right on Time 6 – One of the reasons why the Chilis are so great is because they’re not afraid to put songs on albums that show us how much they’re having and how they don’t take themselves too seriously. On Mother’s Milk it was Fire, BSSM was They’re Red Hot, One Hot Minute has Pea, and now Californication has Right on Time. They’re all just fun songs that at the end of the day, could probably just be taken or left, but they work so well just because of how they exist within the confines of the album as a whole. As for this track, all I’ll say is holy shit, Flea.
  15. Road Trippin’ 6 – This song makes me reflect on their earlier work and the reviews I wrote for those albums just because it’s so damn different.... and I guess because it's the name of the review series. Even as early as BSSM, the Chilis would have never written something like this: completely acoustic with Anthony providing the melody and an emphasis on strings. The band went full Time of Your Life on us, guys. But in all seriousness, what a great closer. This song is such a sweet and gentle ode to friendship. And, fun fact, this song has the same chord progression as Seven Nation Army.
SCORE: 6/7 One of the interesting aspects of this album is the Chili’s surrender of much of their mojo. In groups of guys, it’s pretty common for everyone to try to one-up or outdo one another in some way. It’s funny going back and listening to BSSM these days because you can tell that what John really wanted to create was something mellow like Californication, Otherside, or the entirety of By The Way. But in a way, surrendering the band’s funk and fun would have been extremely bold and uncharacteristic at the time, and Anthony wasn’t yet comfortable with full-blown singing. He was even scared to record Under the Bridge because he didn’t believe it fit the band’s overall sound. But upon John’s reentry, everyone was on board with the direction that John wanted to take; he steered the band toward uncharted territory with his mellow compositions and focus on melody. The Chili Peppers were becoming less and less like P-Funk and more and more like the Beach Boys, and this album was a damn fine middle-ground between the two.
Next up is the Chili’s most lush-sounding album to date, By the Way.
Underrated Track: Purple Stain
Overrated Track: Porcelain
Tell me how I did! Displeased with my score of Emit Remmus? Think I was too harsh or too generous in general? I’d love to see your takes below.

2019.04.10 18:54 DungeonessSpit The 80 best 80s and 90s albums

1980s
1: JOY DIVISION - CLOSER
No album has ever matched the emotional intensity that this album possess. Sure, there may be more dramatic music out there, but nothing that feels as genuine as this. I personally feel that this is the 80s' best album because of how strongly I connected to it when I was most depressed. It made me feel less alone.
Curtis's baritone vocals and bleak lyrics go perfectly with the music; Sumner's guitar work evokes an atmosphere like no other guitarist and his use of synthesizers here is a brilliant glimpse of what he would do with New Order; and Peter Hook manages to write a 10/10 bassline on every song, just as he did on Unknown Pleasures and every album after this.
2: NEW ORDER - MOVEMENT
Ian Curtis had just killed himself and his surviving band mates were left in a shitty position. Luckily, they were all among the best musicians of all time and have the greatest discography post-death-of-frontman of any band ever. At least of the ones that were also successful prior to the death of their frontman. What makes New Order even more brilliant though is that they didn't even search elsewhere for a new singer, they just had their guitarist take over as the new singer and songwriter.
They still manage to bang out 12 (if you're counting the singles that are on the deluxe edition, and 15 if you count their b-sides) dark and catchy songs that are more than worthy of following up Closer.
It may only be on the deluxe edition but "Ceremony" is one of the greatest songs of all time. Half written by Curtis before his death and half written by Sumner after his death, it perfectly symbolizes the transition from Joy Division to New Order and contains what were easily Curtis's most hopeful and optimistic lyrics ("Forever watching love grow / Forever letting me know / Forever").
3: DAVID BOWIE - SCARY MONSTERS
Robert Fripp returns on this album and he makes every track an eargasm. As a huge fan of King Crimson I could listen to this album for countless hours just because of the sound of his guitar work.
Scary Monsters is a sort of a new wave spin on Bowie's classic Berlin Trilogy, and is also sadly the last truly great thing he would do until 2016. This album is also probably his funniest with songs like the title track and the "Space Oddity" sequel "Ashes to Ashes."
4: JOY DIVISION - SUBSTANCE
Perhaps not a studio album but only one of the songs on this album had been included on either of Joy Division's studio efforts because they didn't include their singles on their albums (a far superior version of "She's Lost Control" is included here). The result is compilation of ten incredible post-punk songs. "Atmosphere" is a stunningly beautiful song while "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is a heartbreaking final song that was pretty much a sneak peak of the synthy greatness the band would get up to without Curtis.
5: NEW ORDER - POWER, CORRUPTION AND LIES
While New Order had released the brilliant (and ever so slightly better) Movement two years prior, they were still musically pretty much the same band that made Closer. Power, Corruption and Lies is where they proved they were worthy of carrying a different name.
From the second the upbeat bassline on "The Age of Consent" comes in you know this going to be a great album. The sunny synth bridge is beautiful to me every time I hear it.
Every non-U.K. version of this album contains the band's most famous song, "Blue Monday," the top selling 12" single of all time (and it still managed to lose incredible amounts of money due to the expensive packaging). But that may not even be the highlight. "The Age of Consent," "The Village," "5-8-6," "Your Silent Face" and "Leave Me Alone" are all equally great.
6: THE POLICE - SYNCHRONICITY
The Police ended rather early after just five albums but they went out with their best effort. Very musically eclectic and with consistently great melodies combined with lyrics whose quality range from dorky as fuck ("Walking in Your Footsteps") to brilliant, Synchronicity is a masterpiece (or at least nearly one).
It may seem like a silly question due to how many times we've all heard it but - has there ever been a better song than "Every Breath You Take?" If you can set aside how tired of it you are, it's not out of the question. It has simple but brilliant lyrics that manage to confuse over half the people who've heard the song into thinking it's about something it's not and it manages to say so much by saying so little. It succeeds brilliantly at its creepiness by being barely creepy, presenting the song from the perspective of someone with a warped sense of what love is. And it's all carried by the best bassline ever written.
7: NEW ORDER - TECHNIQUE
Ten years and seven studio albums and this band was still making great, innovative music and continuing to evolve. The album is half acid house and half alternative rock (1993's Republic follows the same formula but to much weaker results).
The lyrics are, well, pretty meh (except on rare occasions). But that really doesn't matter when every song is this insanely catchy.
8: THE CLASH - SANDINISTA!
The Clash knew that the only way punk rock could stay punk was for it to evolve, so they did the most punk rock thing imaginable and abandoned punk rock almost entirely. Instead, Sandinista! is a shockingly cohesive mix of art rock, reggae, dub, electronic music, rockabilly and even hip hop. Two and a half hours of it, which you'd think would get tiresome, but it doesn't due to how entrancing it is.
Sandinista! is an album that will take several listens to truly appreciate and the amount of filler here is remarkably, remarkably low. Ironically, Sandinista! is punk as fuck.
9: KING CRIMSON - DISCIPLINE
I don't think any band has managed to stay relevant for as long as King Crimson had. They released landmark albums in three fucking decades and continued to make decent music into the 1990s and 2000s. King Crimson managed to beautifully, beautifully adapt with the times, becoming a new wave band after a seven year hiatus without losing what made them them. This album is pure joy to listen to and is often beautiful ("Matte Kudasai") and funny ("Indiscipline").
10: ROXY MUSIC - AVALON
I can still vividly remember my experiences with GTA: Vice City. Games have since progressed far beyond what they were in 2002 but no game has yet managed to immerse me in the way Vice City did. And that statement isn't nostalgia speaking, this is a game that still holds up today (trust me, I just played it again a month ago).
A massive part of what made this game so great was the music. Roxy Music had two songs on the Vice City airways, both of which are from this album.
I can still remember the first time I got out of my glorious Ocean Beach apartment on a clear night and hopped in the 1961 Dodge Dart that was always parked by the stairs and flipped the radio to "EMOTION 98.3" as the song "More Than This" faded in. I had chills as I drove down Washington Beach past the pixelated prostitutes and palm trees and illuminated neon buildings. I was so awestruck by the game's and the song's beauty that I wasn't even tempted to run over the pedestrians that were just begging to be flattened. Never before had I felt like I was somewhere else so much.
I didn't save the game so that every time I booted it up I could experience the same thing with the same song. And every time I didn't feel like I was playing a game, but instead felt like I was in 1986.
The melody is so perfectly subtle, the kind you could never get sick of, while also being infectious. The chorus is almost anticlimactic in the best way possible. As Bryan Ferry sings "There's nothing more than this" I can't help but agree. If he's talking about love, I'm with him. If he's talking about the fact that those are the only words in the chorus, then yeah, I suppose he's right about that too.
The feeling "More Than This" possesses is one that carries through the rest of the album. "India" is a gorgeous sub-two-minute song. The Space Between is another track that makes me feel like I'm somewhere I've never been. There may have been shortcomings in their other two albums after they reunited but this album is everything they wanted to accomplish and serves as the perfect finale to one of art rock's great acts.
11: NEW ORDER - BROTHERHOOD
New Order was very far from being a band that was about the lyrics - they were often quite shite to be honest. But "Bizarre Love Triangle" is one of the best songs ever written, both lyrically and musically. Every single goddamn line in this song is simple but brilliant. There are very, very few songs where every line makes you go "Damn, that's a good lyric" and this is one of those songs despite its simplicity.
And that's not even mentioning the music itself. Goddamn is it amazing. That lead in to the chorus is the most beautiful piece of music ever composed and the bass solo at the end is incredible.
But the rest of the album is nearly on the same level. The opening track "Paradise" takes you straight to the 80s and everything after keeps up the fun. Brotherhood is all killer, no filler.
12: BLONDIE - AUTOAMERICAN
On Automerican Blondie went a little wild with the experimentation. Many albums with this many genres mixed together still work as albums, but Automerican plays more like a collection of really great songs which knocks it down a notch. That said, the songs here are damn good (if a little cheesy) and the version I have has "Call Me," an absolute classic.
13: BEASTIE BOYS - PAUL'S BOUTIQUE
After the cheesy frat rap of Licensed to Ill, Paul's Boutique is the Beastie Boys first of several great albums. It makes very creative and original use of samples and the Beastie's sense of humor is constantly entertaining, making one of the most fun albums ever made
14: BLACK FLAG - MY WAR
Damaged may have come first - and three years earlier - but My War is still probably the album that would be more influential for sludge metal and post hardcore bands. It also undeniably has the better songs with the title track probably being the band's best song period.
15: TOM PETTY - FULL MOON FEVER
Full Moon Fever is just a chill album. It's filled with countless catchy melodies and plenty of dorky but sometimes clever and charming lyrics. "Free Fallin'" and "I Won't Back Down" remain possibly his two best songs.
16: KING CRIMSON - THREE OF A PERFECT PAIR
A shockingly overlooked album from a legendary band. Adrian Belew brings some heart to a very unemotional band on this album. Who'd've thunk a song like "Model Man" would've come from King Crimson?
The first half is filled with some excellent pop songs while the second half is all experimental. Both are great.
17: THE POLICE - GHOST IN THE MACHINE
Zenyatta Mondatta served as an overly easy-on-the ears and somewhat boring transition from their punkish reggae rock albums of the 70s to their synthy atmospheric new wave albums of the 80s. Ghost in the Machine does everything Zenyatta Mondatta did but better plus more.
Opening with three of the very best Police songs, all the songs do sound quite similar afterwards and there is an overuse of horns but there still isn't anything anywhere near bad.
18: PETER GABRIEL - SO
So is one of the 80s' great art pop albums. There are some infectiously cheesy songs on here like "Sledgehammer" and "Big Time" but there's also beautiful songs like "Red Rain" and "In Your Eyes."
18: TALK TALK - IT'S MY LIFE
Talk Talk may have moved on to better and more interesting things in the 90s, but It's My Life is one of the overlooked masterpieces of 80s synth-pop. The title track and "Such a Shame" are some of the best synth-pop songs of all time.
19: INXS - KICK
Every track on this brief half hour album is pop perfection, especially "New Sensation," "Need You Tonight" and "Never Tear Us Apart."
20: THE CLASH - COMBAT ROCK
Combat Rock is a very laid back album for the Clash. There are still some rock tracks like the first three, but other than that it's damn chill. No matter how cheesy they are, "Should I Stay or Should I Go" and "Rock the Casbah" are classics and "Straight to Hell" has become pretty iconic after being sampled by M.I.A., and it's a great song in the first place. A shame this had to be their last album but it's absurd that they made four classic and a decent album in just five years.
21: PINK FLOYD - THE FINAL CUT
You'd think listening to a guy that sounds like a British grandma go on anti war tirades set to the backdrop of minimalist music would get infuriating after forty minutes. I thought so as well. I can't explain why I like it so much.
22: TALKING HEADS - REMAIN IN LIGHT
Remain in Light is by far my favorite Talking Heads album. Aside from this album I really only like their singles (but I do fucking love their singles) but this album is great front to back.
23: MIDNIGHT OIL - DIESEL AND DUST
Diesel and Dust brilliantly translates its political, social and environmental messages into some top notch alternative rock and Peter Garrett's voice is wonderfully unique. There isn't even any filler on this album.
24: TOM WAITS - RAIN DOGS
If I had to describe Rain Dogs as anything, it'd be carnival music from Hell, with the occasional conventional ballad - well, as conventional as you can get with Tom Waits' Captain Beefheart-esque voice.
25: KATE BUSH - HOUNDS OF LOVE
Hounds of Love opens with the epic "Running up That Hill," a synth-pop masterpiece. Both sides of this album feel very different and like they need each other at the same time, with the genres tackled here ranging from progressive pop to dance pop.
26: DAVID BOWIE - LET'S DANCE
David Bowie's first overtly mainstream album and the only good one. The first three tracks are all perfect pop music but I greatly prefer Iggy Pop's original version of "China Girl." The version I have has "Under Pressure" as a bonus track, so that's cool. Oh, and the title track's chorus is blissful.
27: METALLICA - RIDE THE LIGHTNING
My favorite Metallica album. Every moment in this album is great, whereas Master of Puppets has too much filler - not entire songs, but long sections in each song that just didn't need to be there. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" may be cheesy but fuck if it isn't badass.
28: CELTIC FROST - MORBID TALES
Morbid Tales was an extremely influential album for the development of extreme and black metal and at a brief 24 minutes, every second of this album kicks ass.
29: U2 - BOY
Boy is an overlooked U2 album and easily their best of the 80s. U2 were a little late to the game with post-punk, but compared to the rest of the post-punk albums around this time, this one feels very "big" and the Edge's guitar work is already very distinctive. Its weakest point is probably its lyrics but Bono sells 'em.
30: THE CURE - DISINTEGRATION
"Pictures of You" may be over seven minutes long, but I wouldn't mind if it were thirty. There's a feeling to this album that I can't exactly describe, but it's a good one and there are so many incredible songs here (especially "Plainsong," "Pictures of You" and "Lovesong"). Second only to their debut for them.
31: MEAT PUPPETS - UP ON THE SUN
Up on the Sun sounds like it came straight out of 1994. Every time I listen to this album I feel like it's mid-summer again.
Side note: One of the lead singers of this band met the drummer of Steppenwolf in prison and they formed a prison band together. The reason he was in prison? He was arguing over a parking spot with a woman. A security guard walked over to defuse the situation so he grabbed the guard's baton and started beating him with it. The security guard then shot him and that ended the fight.
32: BILLY IDOL - REBEL YELL
This album is dorky as fuck but I can't help but like it. For two minutes I thought Billy fucking Idol had genuinely written a beautiful song in "Eyes Without a Face," and then that stupid ass bridge came in and made me like it more. I likely have some mental disorders.
33: OZZY OSBOURNE - BLIZZARD OF OZZ
After this album Ozzy descended too far into cheesiness (even on Diary of a Madman), but this album is great. The highlight is probably Randy Rhoades' guitar solo in "Mr. Crowley."
34: NEW ORDER - LOW-LIFE
Low-Life opens with "Love Vigilantes," one of my favorite songs of all time; and follows it up with "The Perfect Kiss," another great song with a bridge consisting of frog sound effects.
There's a lot of songs here that are only decent but there's also the gorgeous instrumental "Elegia" and the dumb but catchy closer "Face Up."
35: GUNS N' ROSES - APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION
Appetite for Destruction is by far the best 80s hair metal album. I know that doesn't say much but when I say by far, I mean it. Of course it's still cheesy, but there's just a sense of earnest here that isn't there in the rest of this metal subgenre. And these songs rocked way better.
36: XTC - SKYLARKING
I fucking love this album's atmosphere. I wish I lived in this album. It feels like a world of eternal summer. The first two tracks are two of my favorite songs ever.
37: THE SMITHS - HATFUL OF HOLLOW
Hatful of Hollow is a compilation of singles and tracks that weren't used on their debut, and it's the much better album. "William, it Was Really Nothing" and "How Soon is Now?" are both phenomenal songs and Morrissey's lyrics are consistently funny.
38: DURAN DURAN - RIO
An enjoyable if cheesy new romantic album. The title track and "Hungry Like the Wolf" are the best songs here but everything is pretty solid.
39: U2 - THE JOSHUA TREE
Opens with four of the best songs of all time and then falls a little flat. Still, there's not many songs as uplifting as "Where the Streets Have No Name."
40: N.W.A - STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON
Not sure if any album in hip hop was this influential. Public Enemy's It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back was definitely a more "intelligent" record but it also definitely didn't have the same impact as this album did. Hip hop changed, and it changed fast after this album.
It has phenomenal songs like "Express Yourself" and the first two tracks but sadly the aggression present in the first two tracks dies quickly and we're left with a fun record but a bunch of songs with dated production and lyrics.
1990s
1: THE SMASHING PUMPKINS - SIAMESE DREAM
Siamese Dream was one of the first albums I truly loved. It's sixty minutes and not a second of it is dull. The music is consistently some of the most amazing ever composed and the drumming is some of the best I've ever heard. It's wall of sound gives it a great atmosphere and thankfully drowns out some of the poor lyrics. Billy Corgan's voice here is unique but not overly nasally and grating like it is on their follow-up. Still have no clue what "The killer in me is the killer in you" means though.
2: PEARL JAM - NO CODE
I found No Code during a very shitty time in my life. It was after my first break-up and I was in state of constant and inescapable depression. At that point I'd only listened to Pearl Jam's first three albums because I'd been told they fell off after that.
One day I decided to give this album a listen and thank God I did. No Code is quite different from Pearl Jam's previous albums. The song closet to anything on Vitalogy is "Lukin" and it's only a minute long. It's very warm and calm but every song still manges to be memorable.
At the time I had moved away from my home, Seattle, and I missed my friends and this album reminded me so much of home. It has what are easily Eddie Vedder's best lyrics. It also helped me through the loneliness I was experiencing due to my only friend in the new city having been my girlfriend.
3: PAVEMENT - SLANTED AND ENCHANTED
An album that always makes me think of summer. The artwork perfectly shows you what you're getting into in this album. Messy as hell and filled with constantly entertaining lyrics. It has possibly the most memorable melodies I've ever heard on one album. Even the love songs are unique by asking unusual questions such as "How can I make my body shed for you?" Despite not being a particularly great singer, there's something about Stephen Malkmus's voice that I love.
4: FAITH NO MORE - ANGEL DUST
After the massive hit "Epic" Faith No More took a serious step back from the mainstream. And thank God they did because everything before this album is utter shit. Angel Dust is an incredibly unique album that I could only describe as "psychedelic funk metal" and would be a huge influence on many shitty bands in the late 90s like Slipknot, Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park. Oh well, the album itself is amazing and Mike Patton's vocals are insane.
5: THE SMASHING PUMPKINS - ADORE
Adore is an album I didn't appreciate when I went through a phase of loving the Pumpkins but I love it so much more now. After drummer Jimmy Chamberlain was kicked from the band after him and their keyboardist overdosed (with the keyboardist dying), they made every song on this album either acoustic or electronic, seeing as Chamberlain is an irreplaceable drummer.
And it works beautifully. It has some of the most dreamy and entrancing music I've ever heard and Billy Corgan's lyrics are the most genuine here. It was a huge step away from the art rock of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. It goes on for 73 minutes and never gets boring.
6: DEPECHE MODE - VIOLATOR
"Enjoy the Silence" and "Personal Jesus" are two of the best songs of all time and that isn't all this album has going for it. Songs like "World in My Eyes" and "Policy of Truth" are great as well and the album has a great atmosphere. This is also one of the few albums where the b-sides are nearly as good as the singles.
7: BEASTIE BOYS - ILL COMMUNICATION
There's not many albums that manage to be so experimental and accessible at the same. I don't know if there's an album that fuses hip hop, hardcore punk, funk and jazz as well as this one and still remains cohesive. Ill Communication and Check Your Head are nearly equally good but I put this one ahead for its standout tracks like "Sure Shot," "Sabotage" and "Get it Together."
8: NAS - ILLMATIC
There are not many albums that sound so perfectly reminiscent of the place they were made like this one. This album reeks of New York. Every song on this album is incredible. "Life's a Bitch" has the best lyrics of any hip hop song ever made and the sax solo at the end from Nas's dad Olu Dara never fails to move me.
9: BECK - STEREOPATHETIC SOULMANURE
An album that has received mostly negative reviews but is one of my all time favorites. A beautiful cohesive collage of so many genres. It simply works. Easily Beck's most underrated album. There are few songs in the world as funny as "Satan Gave Me a Taco."
10: BEASTIE BOYS - CHECK YOUR HEAD
Almost as good as Ill Communication. While Paul's Boutique is one of my favorite albums of the 80s, I think the Beasties peaked in the 90s with their first two albums of the decade. While Paul's Boutique was definitely a massive leap in its artistic merit from the cringey frat rap of Licensed to Ill and an indication of the great things they would later do, it was still immature party rap. Check Your Head was when they truly became great. So many cheesy lyrics but I guess that's just part of the Beastie's charm.
11: U2 - ZOOROPA
As someone who doesn't particularly like U2, this is a great album despite being disliked by the band's fan base (for being... different I guess?). It's not really anything like most U2 albums. The lyrics are a little lacking as is always the case with U2 but the (mostly electronic) music itself is among the most beautiful I've ever heard. "The Wanderer" with Johnny Cash is such a wtf moment and is one of my favorite album closers ever. Cash's voice fits shockingly well with electronic music. "Zooropa" and "Lemon" are gorgeous tracks as well.
12: THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIK
Coulda been higher if it wasn't so unnecessarily long. This is where Frusciante develops his own style after he basically just copied Slovak on Mother's Milk. This is one of the most fun albums ever made.
13: THE LEMONHEADS - IT'S A SHAME ABOUT RAY
This album reminds me of something, but I'm not sure what. The past I guess? It really feels like it embodies the early 90s even though I didn't exist then. Anyhow, this is a very fun album and not even a horrendous cover Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson" can hold it back. The title track is one of my favorite songs of all time
14: JOHNNY CASH - AMERICAN RECORDINGS
Old man Johnny singing some covers of classic country and folk songs and a few original songs for 40 minutes. I can't think of anything much better. I used to listen to this before going to sleep every night.
15: PEARL JAM - 10
The second half is a boring slog but there are few songs as great as "Once," "Even Flow," "Why Go," "Alive" and "Jeremy." And I don't know if there's a song out there more beautiful than "Black."
16: WEEZER - PINKERTON
For two albums Weezer was actually interesting, and this is the better one between the two. It's a lot more personal and is one of the handful of albums that got me through my first breakup. After the mixed reviews it received Weezer went back to the sound of their debut but to increasingly diminishing results and were never interesting again.
17: THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - ONE HOT MINUTE
Faith No More and RHCP both started out as funk-rap / hard rock bands and were rivals but both bands branched out and went in different directions. Yet in and odd turn of events, they both wound up in the incredibly specific genre of "psychedelic funk metal." Who woulda thunk.
It sounds absurd to say this about an album from The Red Hot Chili Peppers of all people, but One Hot Minute is insanely underrated. An album that was maligned by critics and fans at the time; for the life of me I can't understand why. This is the only example of RHCP's mature era crossing with their energetic funk rock era. It has easily Anthony Kiedis's best lyrics (I know, that isn't saying much) and it's also the most interesting musically.
This album was made during a time when John Frusciante left the band due to disliking fame and he developed an incredibly serious heroin addiction, so they replaced him with Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro who was also a heroin addict. Anthony Kiedis had recently relapsed and the lyrics he was writing were much more serious than anything before or after.
Contrary to what some say, Navarro meshes perfectly with this band - it just isn't the trademark RHCP sound. Some said this album wasn't funky enough. Have you even listened to "Walkabout?" There is very little that sounds like this album and it's a sound I love.
18: THE SMASHING PUMPKINS - MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS
This is an album I have a very odd relationship with. There was a long space of time after my first break-up where if you asked 16-year-old me what the best album ever made was, he would've told you it was this one in a heartbeat. I listened to it every day for four months and I loved all 28 songs.
The drum tracks on this album are some of the best of all time and Billy Corgan came up with some amazing riffs. He also wrote some of the best lyrics of all time for "1979," the most enchanting dream pop song ever written, with "33" and "Tonight, Tonight" being nearly as good.
However, this album is one I've lost a lot of my love for.Billy's incessant wailing gets really, really grating after two hours and the lyrics are mostly horrendous. I'd assume "Zero" and "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" were tongue-in-cheek but that doesn't save other songs from their unironic terrible lyrics. At least you couldn't understand shit he said on Siamese Dream.
19: THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - CALIFORNICATION
My first time listening to Californication may be one of my most vivid recollections of a musical experience. We were poor and my dad had stopped paying our internet so I didn't have shit to do. I had a laptop - stolen, mind you - but there was damn near nothing on it besides hundreds of photos of the lady who owned it.
Other than the pictures, the only things on it were Minesweeper, solitaire, and Californication by The Red Hot Chili Peppers. I didn't know how to play Minesweeper so I plugged in some headphones and listened to Californication while playing some solitaire.
I didn't think much of the first two tracks but the moment "Scar Tissue" came on I was covered in goosebumps. I don't know how I didn't know this song was by the Chili Peppers. I'd heard it so many times years and years ago as a kid and loved it but hadn't heard it in ten years. It was like a memory you forgot you had coming back. It's such a nostalgia invoking song. I listened to the song over and over and over. John Frusciante's guitar work manages to evoke emotions like no other and he does it everywhere on this album. Call it a sellout album, but this is some top tier melodic cheese. Wouldn't've stuck with me so long if it wasn't. "Otherside" is the second best song.
20: NINE INCH NAILS - BROKEN
I'll preface this by saying I'm not a fan of Nine Inch Nails. While there are a few songs from them I love ("Hurt," "Head Like a Hole") most of their 20th century albums are plagued by melodramatic nonsense lyrics that I can't ignore. If I'm being honest, last year's Bad Witch is my favorite LP from them.
But despite Broken still having some of my major problems with NIN, it completely makes up for it in its abrasiveness and brevity. It doesn't quietly and pathetically wallow for minutes on end like The Downward Spiral or The Fragile, it's just an explosion of pure anger for 30 minutes. It's never dull, it's never meandering, every second of this album needs to be there. Never before has an album's artwork fit so incredibly perfectly with the content of the music.
I fucking love this shitty EP, so long as I can forget that there's a song on it titled "Happiness in Slavery" (which is a good song... so long as you can forget it's titled "Happiness in Slavery").
21: FAITH NO MORE - KING FOR A DAY... FOOL FOR A LIFETIME
The album where Faith No More went art rock and to great success. An album that was and continues to be panned by critics but a fan favorite, this is almost on the same level as Angel Dust. Faith No More became a band that is pretty much unrecognizable as the one that made The Real Thing six years ago.
Their guitarist was replaced by Trey Spruance from Patton's other band Mr. Bungle, who definitely fits this album better than their last guitarist would have. The highlight is the lounge jazz "Evidence," one of those songs you'd be surprised is by the same band that made "Epic."
22: NO DOUBT - TRAGIC KINGDOM
Gwen Stefani has been a part of three albums I really like, this one sadly being the last. Her voice was off-putting for me at first but I love it now and the music is consistently fun as hell. My favorite third wave ska album, but not by far.
23: SUBLIME - SUBLIME
This was my dad's favorite album while I was growing up so maybe nostalgia has tied me to this one. Bradley Nowell's voice is another that I love despite not being technically great. His voice on "Seed" (the song that best demonstrates this band's abitlity to merge genres) is incredible.
24: NIRVANA - IN UTERO
I think In Utero is an album I'd like much more if I hadn't been so overexposed to some of the songs on it. "Scentless Apprentice" is the best song this band ever made.
25: RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE - EVIL EMPIRE
Maybe less fresh and groundbreaking than their debut but more consistent and enjoyable.
26: NIRVANA - NEVERMIND
An album I'd gladly never listen to again but I can't ignore how much I loved some of these songs in my early teens.
27: OUTKAST - ATLIENS
One of the very first albums I loved. The first several tracks and "13th Floor" are some of my favorite OutKast songs.
28: RAEKWON - ONLY BUILT 4 CUBAN LINX...
Undoubtedly the best Wu-Tang album, solo or not. RZA's production has never been better and every track is a banger. There are so few albums that aren't boring after 70 minutes. This is one of them. Side note: "Criminology" is the best beat in hip hop history.
29: RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE - RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE
Like Angel Dust, this is another album that I wish hadn't influenced so many shitty bands. It's very cheesy but I love this album's energy and catchiness.
30: OUTKAST - AQUEMINI
Lots of great songs here like "Return of the G," both parts of "Da Art of Storytellin'" and "SpottieOttieDopalicious." Maybe a bit too long and a lot of the skits are uninteresting.
31: KYUSS - WELCOME TO SKY VALLEY
The quintessential stoner metal album and better than the stuff Josh Homme would later go on to do with Queens of the Stone Age.
32: GUNS N' ROSES - USE YOUR ILLUSION I
The better of the two albums Guns N' Roses released on the same day in 1991 (Use Your Illusion II has got some serious duds on it). Cheesy but enjoyable for the whole 80 minutes.
33: BECK - MELLOW GOLD
The album that opens with Beck's most famous song "Loser." Like Stereopathetic Soulmanure but less weird.
34: PAVEMENT - BRIGHTEN THE CORNERS
This album opens with two of Pavement's very best songs "Stereo" and "Shady Lane." The whole album is chill and filled with ballads that remind me of late summer / early fall and it's a very sincere record.
35: PAVEMENT - CROOKED RAIN, CROOKED RAIN
There aren't many songs as charming as "Silence Kit" and "Gold Soundz."
36: JANE'S ADDICTION - RITUAL DE LO HABITUAL
An improvement over their debut Nothing's Shocking (another great record), this one benefits from its incredible psychedelic second side.
37: RADIOHEAD - THE BENDS
Radiohead's best 90s album has phenomenal songs like the title track, "High and Dry" and "Street Spirit." The true highlight though is Radiohead's best song "Fake Plastic Trees."
38: JAY-Z - REASONABLE DOUBT
Jay turned into a bit of a zombie after this album. On the In My Lifetime trilogy he sounds like he really doesn't give a shit. On this album he's at the top of his game lyrically and and he sounds much more ambitious.
39: BJÖRK - HOMOGENIC
Homogenic is another album that I used to go to sleep to every night. Björk's voice is passionate and beautifully unique and the cold electronic music creates a great atmosphere.
40: SOUNDGARDEN - SUPERUNKNOWN
An album that suffers from being too long. 40 minutes of hard rock is exhausting, let alone 80. That said, this album contains some of my favorite songs of all time like the first two tracks.
What're your favorite albums of the 80s and 90s? Why?

2019.04.09 16:00 DungeonessSpit The 40 best 80s albums

24: KATE BUSH - HOUNDS OF LOVE
Hounds of Love opens with the epic "Running up That Hill," a synth-pop masterpiece. Both sides of this album feel very different and like they need each other at the same time, with the genres tackled here ranging from progressive pop to dance pop.
25: DAVID BOWIE - LET'S DANCE
David Bowie's first overtly mainstream album and the only good one. The first three tracks are all perfect pop music but I greatly prefer Iggy Pop's original version of "China Girl." The version I have has "Under Pressure" as a bonus track, so that's cool. Oh, and the title track's chorus is blissful.
26: TOM WAITS - RAIN DOGS
If I had to describe Rain Dogs as anything, it'd be carnival music from Hell, with the occasional conventional ballad - well, as conventional as you can get with Tom Waits' Captain Beefheart-esque voice.
Why?

We’ve been waiting for an hour. That’s what Audrey says. She states it with a little bit of an edge, her words just bordering on cursive. That’s the thing I think first. Not: Audrey Hepburn is at my birthday dinner, but Audrey Hepburn is annoyed.
At one point or another, we’ve all been asked to name five people, living or dead, with whom we’d like to have dinner. Why do we choose the people we do? And what if that dinner was to actually happen? These are the questions Rebecca Serle contends within her utterly captivating novel, The Dinner List, a story imbued with the same delightful magical realism as One Day, and the life-changing romance of Me Before You.
When Sabrina arrives at her thirtieth birthday dinner she finds at the table not just her best friend, but also three significant people from her past, and well, Audrey Hepburn. As the appetizers are served, e poured, and dinner table conversation begins, it becomes clear that there’s a reason these six people have been gathered together.
Delicious but never indulgent, sweet with just the right amount of bitter, The Dinner List is a romance for our times. Bon appetit.

As the appetizers are served, wine poured, and dinner table conversation begins, it becomes clear that there’s a reason these six people have been gathered together.
Delicious but never indulgent, sweet with just the right amount of bitter, The Dinner List is a romance for our times. Bon appetit.

2018.07.18 16:51 jaysjep2 Jeopardy! recap for Wed., Jul. 18

Jeopardy! recap for Wed., Jul. 18 - Here are today's contestants:
Ryan was poised to take the lead with a double-up on DD3, but Trebek cut him off as he was starting to change his initial incorrect response, sending Ryan to $0. But Ryan was able to bounce back into second place going into FJ with $6,800 vs. $10,600 for Kyle and $5,600 for Caitlion.
DD1 - FILM & HIT SONG SAME NAME - Nicolas Cage and Sheryl Crow (Caitlion lost $2,000)
DD2 - THE OED'S RECENT WORDS - The name of these Yellow & Black study guides is used to suggest "a superficial grounding but no real insight" (Caitlion lost $2,200 on a true DD.)
DD3 - SOCRATES, PLATO AND ARISTOTLE - Aristotle wrote that for this genre, the plot must "imitate actions arousing fear and pity" (Ryan lost $4,800 on a true DD.)
FJ - 20TH CENTURY PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS - The last election in which both major party candidates were former state governors was in this year
Only Ryan was correct on FJ, adding $6,799 to win with $13,599 and a six-day total of $127,397.
Triple Stumpers of the day: in the "Dis" category, no one knew Animal House director John Landis or Red Hot Chili Peppers singer Anthony Kiedis.
This day in Trebekistan: On DD3, Alex had an opportunity to rule Ryan incorrect immediately, but instead hesitated, only jumping in after Ryan said "What is" for the second time. Alex easily could have chosen to let Ryan finish correcting himself (or asked him to be more specific), but didn't.
This clue is a prime example of why this odd rule of allowing players to change responses if Alex hasn't yet ruled against them is very problematic, as it can be enforced inconsistently.
Correct Qs: DD1 - What is "Leaving Las Vegas"? DD2 - What are CliffsNotes? DD3 - What is tragedy? (Ryan initially said "drama".) FJ - What is 1980?

2018.06.05 17:52 leandrorhcp On this day in 1998, 20 years ago, the band did their first public appearance after John's comeback at KBLT pirate radio

This is the first public appearance after John's comeback, although it's not technically a "show". Here's an excerpt from Sue Carpenter's "40 Watts from Nowhere: A Journey Into Pirate Radio" book:
It's a cool summer night when, unknown to anyone else at the station, Keith brings the Red Hot Chili Peppers - Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith and John Frusciante, who just rejoined the band. Their performance on KBLT marks Frusciante's debut with the re-formed lineup.
Keith's association with the Peppers dates back almost two decades, when FLea played with the Circle Jerks, but it was when Keith was hanging out at a mutual friend's house that Anthony Kiedis stopped by, and he asked if the Chili Peppers might want to play an acoustic set at KBLT. They were all over it. It's probably a relief for them to play at a place where fans aren't begging to sniff their underwear.
Keith doesn't give them KBLT's address. He never gives it to anyone. Instead, he meets them at the Circus of Books, a porn shop and magazine stand down the street from my house, and the five of them walk up the slope to the station, carrying guitars, bongos and congas, whit more than a few watchful eyes following them. When they step into the station, the drum 'n' bass show Rumble in the Jungle is in full swing. Wing, in his cargo pants, and Paris, with his dreads, are scratching on the turntables and taking turns with the reverb as they shout out over the music. They throw on their last twelve-inch when they see Keith.
While Rumble's packing up, the Peppers set up their gear in my hallway. Keith takes over the controls, kicking off a set with Jimi Hendrix, continuing on with Frank Black, the Soft Boys, T-Model Ford, Husker Du, and Soundgarden, and anchoring it with Motorhead's "The Chase Is Better Than The Catch". The Peppers are ready.
John Frusciante steps up to the mike, which is resting on a chair at the studio's entrance, and gets things going with "I've Been Insane", playing guitar and singing while Chad Smith plays bongos behind him. Flea's up next. He sings "I Can't Remember" before the rest of the band joins in to play "Skinny Sweaty Man", "I Could Have Lied" and "Not Great Men". With only one microphone, it sounds less than a performance and more like an eavesdropping session during private rehearsal, but this is how bands always perform at KBLT. They take a break to play some of the music the band brought in -Rammstein, Betty Davis, PJ Harvey- then head into another set.
It's hard to figure out if it even really happened. Few people had heard the show. It takes me several weeks to track down a tape of it, and that was from a writer from the SonicNet Web site who had recorded it to write a review.
There are unfortunately no pictures from this performance, however you can download an audio recording here:

2017.12.22 22:38 MinorKingg Intresting sentence

I am currently reading Scar Tissue. This is a autobiograpy by Anthony Kiedis from the RHCP. He started using drugs from the age 12. His definite sobriety date is December 24, 2000. He was an extreme junkie and alcoholic.
He says in the book: "December 24, 2000,is my sobriety date, which is a festive holiday date, and very uncommon. Most dope fiends get loaded for the rest of the holidays an then get sober after New Years's".
If he can do this, we can do it for sure!! What doesn't kill you makes you stronger!:)

2017.06.23 10:27 psychymikey ACL Artist of the Day #41: Red Hot Chili Peppers

ARTIST: Red Hot Chili Peppers
GENRE: Punk Rock / Funk Rock
Top Song Suggustions:
1- Californication
2- Dark Necessities
3- Can't Stop
Hello guys! Oh the nostalgia, here we go! Today we got the one and only, Red Hot Chili Peppers. I hope everybody has already met the Peppers, hell RHCP raised me and my graduating class. Not many bands can span such a long time and continue to pump out music to this day. The famous lineup of the Peppers is made up of Flea (Michael Balzary), Anthony Kiedis, Chad Smith, and John Frusciante originally. Red Hot Chili Peppers were the cavaliers on the punk rock scene starting waaaayyyy back in the day in 1984, a full decade before I was even born. In high school no band was universally loved like the Peppers. They are just classic, especially to my generation.
Ok here we go with the albums.
'Red Hot Chili Peppers': made only with Flea and Kiedis, debut self titled, rough around the edges, sounds very 80s thrashy funky soul punk rock. It's cool, just not RHCP gold. Listen to- Get Up and Jump, Out in L.A.
'Freaky Styley': 2nd album, cleaned up little bit, TIL early Peppers draws from old old school hip hop. listening to fleas solid baselines throughout the entire thing. Getting better Peppers. Nothing crazy here. Listen to- Hollywood (Africa), Sex Rap, and Jungle Man
'The Uplift Mofo Party Plan': this is where we start to see our Peppers attitude. Funky screaming guitars and cold cut rock outfit styles. I'd start here, they just get better from here. Listen to- Fight Like a Brave, Funky Crime, Subterranean Homesick Blues, Behind the Sun
'Mothers Milk': more organized in song structure, heavy hitting punk rock record, edged away from soul with clean cut album, also cover art is sweet--->( * )( * ) Listen to- Higher Ground, Knock Me Down, Magic Johnson, and Song That Made Us Who We Are Today
'Blood Sugar Sex Magic': this is where they hit it big. First album I remember from them, great hits from now on, our Peppers have emerged to reign over rock. Classic RHCP sound. Their live shows pull songs from this album foward. Listen to- Breaking the Girl, Suck My Kiss, Under the Bridge, Give It Away
'One Hot Minute': not so much punky and more funky. Doesnt dissapoint though, tasty jams everywhere. Introduces a slower sing along RHCP sometimes. Never knew this album existed, it's not to bad tbh. Listen to- My Friends, Aeroplane, Walkabout, and Shallow Be Thy Game
'Californication': they blew up with this album, vocals are spot on what RHCP should be, holds the 3 biggest RHCP songs that are instantly recognizable, rest of the album is really solid even the slow acoustic songs, prob 2nd best album they got Listen to- Californication, Get On Top, Otherside, Scar Tissue, and Around the World
'By The Way': another classic Pepper album, some songs drag but man some other songs hit cha right in the kisser! Listen to- By the Way, The Zepher Song, Can't Stop, This Is The Place
'Stadium Arcadium': my high school nostalgia, maybe I'm bias but #1 right here, 29 songs long 4 huge songs and solid listens all around. I remember listening to this album on repeat for months. Last album with Fuciante. Listen to- Dani California, Hump De Bump, Snow (Hey Oh), Stadium Arcadium and Tell Me Baby
'I'm With You': objectively this album is good, but as a RHCP album it kinda sucks. This is the first album without John Frusciante. I had a hard time finding a good song cause of my high RHCP song standards. Most ppl I know agree this album is their weakest. Still worth a listen though Listen to- Did I Let You Know?, Goodbye Hooray and Look Around
'The Getaway': most recent work, a comeback album for many, return to form imo, received a lot of radio play, I liked it probably like 5th best album after 'BSSM' Listen to- The Getaway, Dark Necessities, Go Robot, Encore and Sick Love
No matter how you feel about them you can't deny that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are the most influential band on this years lineup, simply because they have been around for 30+ years. Playing devils advocate, I have heard that the band is not what it once was. I heard that once Fuciante (lead guitarist) left he took the Peppers flair with him. Simultaneously, I have people swear up and down that they were amazing and perfect just this past year when they came to S.A. in January. Of course with each headliner will come a hard choice of this band or that band. And that's what I'm most afraid of, If it's Killers, Chance, or Gorrillaz I'll probably skip the Peppers tbh. But who knows, October is a long way from now so maybe I'll change my mind. In any case, I know their show will be a fantastic Peppers sing along bonanza. Not to mention any kind of stage antics (remember these guys have preformed wearing only a tube sock before). Any fan, hardcore or casual, will definitely enjoy themselves to be sure.
Dated to the 80s Peppers
Wearing a tube sock Peppers slightly nsfw
Dark Necessities live at lolla '16
Dani California at lolla '16
See y'all Tomorrow!
